(CHICAGO) — A silent Alphanso Talley, 26, appeared in court Monday where he was charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated battery.
Prosecutors say Talley, of Chicago, pulled the trigger Saturday at Swedish Hospital, killing Officer John Bartholomew and severely injuring his partner. While in court, Talley remained silent throughout the proceeding.
Prosecutors offered a brief presentation of Saturday’s events. They say it started at 8 a.m., when Talley allegedly robbed a Family Dollar store on West Lawrence Avenue. They say he pistol-whipped an employee before making off with cash that had a tracking device. Police later tracked Talley down and took him into custody. It was at that time that he told officers he had swallowed a large quantity of drugs. Officers then escorted him to Swedish Hospital.
It was at the hospital while about to undergo a CT scan that prosecutors say Talley was able to procure a gun and opened fire, striking one officer in the head and the other in the face. They say he then shot out a window and escaped. He was taken back into custody a short time later.
Prosecutors did not say how Talley got the handgun into the hospital. Officials with Endeavor Health, who own Swedish Hospital, say security wanded him as he entered but nothing was detected.
Officials say Talley is a seven-time convicted felon. He was ordered held without bond.
