(CHICAGO) — This Wednesday, September 9, at 10:00AM in the lobby of the Daley Civic Center Building, officials will open the Portrait of a Soldier Remembrance memorial to honor the lives of the more than 300 Illinois service members who were killed in action after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
This Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Former Gov. Pat Quinn established the Portrait of a Soldier memorial which has traveled to numerous venues across the state for the people of Illinois to remember – and never forget – true American heroes.
The portraits were drawn by artist Cameron Schilling of Mattoon and artist Donald Jeremiah of Streamwood, and include the name, age, home town, branch of service, rank, and date of death of each fallen service member. The Portrait of a Soldier memorial includes more than 300 individual portraits.
“It is important to have a lasting memorial to these heroic Illinois service members,” Quinn said. “One hundred years from now, people will still see “Portrait of a Soldier”. We won’t be here, but these portraits will be lasting reminders of our time and our special heroes.”
