Amazon on Thursday denied a report it is planning to display the added cost of tariffs on products.
Punchbowl News first reported Thursday that Amazon is planning to display the amount added to a product’s cost by the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on most U.S. imports, which White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called “a hostile and political act by Amazon” in a statement.
A spokesperson for Amazon said in a statement that the plan was floated but “never approved” for implementation.
“The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products,” Amazon spokesperson Tim Doyle said in a statement, according to Axios. “This was never approved and is not going to happen.”
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy warned earlier this month that third-party sellers on the platform, whose merchandise accounts for about 60% of all products sold on Amazon, may attempt to “pass that cost on” to consumers when it comes to Trump’s tariffs.
