Eleven men considered to be armed and dangerous escaped from a New Orleans jail on Friday, according to police.
Ten of the escapees remained on the loose after one of the inmates, Kendell Myles, was apprehended, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office said, ABC News reported.
Sheriff Susan Hutson told reporters the men were unaccounted for during a routine headcount at the Orleans Justice Center at 8:30 a.m. Friday.
WDSU reported reported that sources said the inmates dug a hole inside the jail, possibly under a toilet, to escape.
Hutson said the sheriff’s department was working with local, state, and federal law enforcement on a “full-scale search operation.”
She added the escape was “very serious and unacceptable.”
“We are launching a full investigation to determine how this escape occurred, including reviewing facility protocols, staff performance, and physical security measures,” Hutson said.
WDSU reported the inmates who escaped are Myles, Antoine Massey, Lenton Vanburen, Leo Tate, Derrick Groves, Jermain Donald, Corey Boyd, Gary Price, Robert Moody, Decannon Dennis, and Keith Lewis.
“We don’t want panic, but we do want people to be mindful,” New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick told reporters.
The Orleans Justice Center is located less than three miles from the French Quarter, a prime tourist attraction.
