(CHICAGO) — A 36-year-old Chicago police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty early Friday morning.
Authorities identified the slain officer as Krystal Rivera.
The incident happened at East 82nd Street and South Drexel Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood.
Officers were conducting an investigatory stop when a suspect fled into a nearby apartment building. Officials say officers pursued the suspect and upon entering were confronted by a different suspect with a rifle who opened fire. Officer Rivera was shot and was taken to the University of Chicago hospital in a squad car. She later died due to her injuries.
Officials say Officer Rivera was with the department for four years at the 6th District and was a mother. Another officer suffered a wrist injury.
Officials say multiple people were taken into custody after the shooting.
The Sun-Times is reporting that the squad Officer Rivera was being transported in was involved in an accident while on the way to the hospital.
