(MICHIGAN CITY, Ind.) A west suburban couple is lucky to have suffered only minor injuries after their car drove under the trailer of a semi truck that jackknifed in front of them in I-94 in northwest Indiana on Thursday.
James Ashley, 28, and his wife, Amy, were taken to Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City, Ind., with “non-life threatening injuries” after the crash just before noon Thursday on eastbound I-94 about 3 miles east of the Michigan City (U.S. 421) exit, according to Indiana State Police.
The couple was in a 2011 Honda Civic in the center lane when a 2007 Volvo semi pulling a box trailer “came across their lane of travel. Ashley’s car was wedged underneath,” a statement from ISP said.
The semi, owned by Sarmad Shamoo out of Sterling Heights, Mich., “was in the right lane when he lost control, jackknifed, causing him to go back across all eastbound lanes and hit the concrete median barrier wall head-on,” ISP said.
The driver of the semi — Jan Hanna, 29, of Warren, Mich. — refused treatment at the scene, police said. The truck was hauling metal castings, but there was no load loss.
All three people involved were wearing seat belts, and both vehicles had to be towed, ISP said. Hanna was issued a ticket for failing to properly secure his load.
The left two lanes of I-94 were closed for investigation and cleanup.
ISP said numerous crashes and slide-offs were reported in eastern Porter and LaPorte counties on I-94 because of strong winds and on-and-off snow, leaving the road icy and snow covered in areas.
