(Chicago) A federal judge has upheld Cook County’s puppy mill ordinance.
The judge Wednesday dismissed a complaint that aimed to overturn the new county ordinance banning the sale of commercially bred animals to pet stores in suburban Cook County.
Listen to Nick Gale’s story:
The complaint was filed by several pet store owners and the Missouri Pet Breeders Association. State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez’s office says the lawsuit attempted to block the enforcement of the ordinance which went into effect last October, but has been delayed because of the ongoing litigation.
The judge ruled that Cook County has the home rule authority to regulate animal breeding and sales, but left open an opportunity for the plaintiffs to appeal, even though he says he doubts they could make their case.
