At Chicago City Hall, the long-anticipated city garbage collection fee is beginning to take shape.
Six of the 50 aldermen are backing a monthly residential garbage pick-up fee of no more than $11 tacked onto water bills with a 50% discount for seniors.
Among the six is the mayor’s city council floor leader, Alderman Pat O’Connor. But he says the mayor hasn’t signed off on this proposal yet.
“I wouldn’t say that it’s something that has the blessing of the fifth floor. I would say that this is a symbol of the ongoing process that we’ve been engaged in for the last couple of months, last several of months actually, to try and find ways to address the city’s financial problems” said O’Connor.
At this point, there doesn’t appear to be a city council majority for a garbage fee.© Copyright 89 WLS-AM News
