(CHICAGO) Embattled Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy got a vote of confidence this morning from Mayor Rahm Emanuel as the Chicago City Council’s Black Caucus calls for the mayor to fire McCarthy.
Emanuel said he’s “standing by” McCarthy and said the aldermen are understandably frustrated by the persistent street violence, but he added this.
“My focus, and I want everybody’s focus, is on gangs and guns and not on Garry,” Emanuel said. “The problems related to gun violence are about too easy access to guns, too few penalties and not enough access to job opportunities.”
McCarthy was conspicuously absent from the mayor’s presser, but he said this earlier going into the annual police and fire heroism awards ceremony.
“People ask me why I do my job and when you hear the stories of what these men and women do, that’s exactly the reason,” McCarthy said.
