(CHICAGO) As if state finances aren’t already bad enough, the clock is ticking on something even worse.
Illinois is already insolvent, a deadbeat on paying its bills on time. In five or six months, it could go broke. Here’s why, according to House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie (D-Chicago), Speaker Mike Madigan’s (D-Chicago) top lieutenant.
“Money is going out the door at a very fast clip,” Currie said. “The governor didn’t oppose all those consent decrees that keep state workers getting paid, that keep programs at the Department of Children and Family Services running. He shouldn’t have. But he needs to get serious about adopting a budget that doesn’t mean the state goes totally broke come February or March.”
Listen to BillCameron’s report:
Gov. Bruce Rauner says he’s ready to raise taxes to prevent the state from going broke, but not until the Democrats give him some of his turnaround agenda. Otherwise, he says the Democrats ought to use their super-majorities to pass their own tax hikes.
