(PLAINFIELD) A woman was stabbed to death Tuesday night in southwest suburban Plainfield, and her suspected killer was fatally struck by a vehicle on I-55 a short time later.
Police were dispatched for a welfare check at a home in the 25000 block of Prairie Grove Court at 8:07 p.m., according to a statement from Plainfield police. Officers entered the home and found a 47-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds.
The woman was unresponsive and not breathing, police said. She was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where she was pronounced dead.
Preliminary investigation indicates the incident was a domestic-related homicide, police said. A short time later, the suspect was involved in a fatal traffic crash on I-55 just north of Route 126.
The male, who lived in Plainfield, was hit by a vehicle about 8:15 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-55, according to Illinois State Police and the Will County coroner’s office.
He was taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:06 p.m., the coroner’s office said. The male’s name and age were withheld early Wednesday pending notification of his family.
An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, the coroner’s office said, adding that the male walked out in front of traffic.
Police couldn’t say whether the crash was a suicide or accidental, but no citations or charges have been issued against any drivers.
