(CHICAGO) The FBI is stepping up its role in the probe of Fox Lake Police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz’s death two months ago.
The FBI is said to be mounting a comprehensive study of Gliniewicz’s mental state in an effort to determine if he was murdered or if he committed suicide.
The 52-year-old, beloved by Fox Lake residents who called him “GI JOE,” was gunned down with his own weapon in a rural area after he radioed dispatchers to let them know he was on foot, chasing three suspects. That led to a massive manhunt involving law enforcement from across Northern Illinois. No one was ever arrested in the case.

This independent report could provide relief to many in the community and elsewhere who have questioned the integrity and lengthiness of the death investigation, headed up by the Lake County Major Crime Taskforce. There has been wide speculation over how Gliniewicz died.
