(CHICAGO) The death of a nine-year-old Chicago child is sparking a call to action for lawmakers to pass a budget.
One group claims Gov. Bruce Rauner and the General Assembly deserve a share of the blame for the murder of the nine-year-old.
Voices for Illinois Children claims Springfield deserves a share of the blame because the state budget impasse means after school programs to keep kids off the streets are not getting funded.
“I think that ultimately the governor and lawmakers bear responsibility for the negative impact the budget impasse is having on families and communities,” Emily Miller said. “I don’t think its right for either the governor or the lawmakers to shirk their responsibilities.”
And Miller goes further.
“For months people have been asking me on or off the record whether or not there is a dead body and its been a terrible question to hear time and time again. Well now there is a child.”
But she concedes she doesn’t know if the murdered nine-year-old would have been enrolled in an after school activity if one were available.
