(SPRINGFIELD, IL) Gov. Bruce Rauner has delivered his annual State of the State address to a joint session of the General Assembly in Springfield, but something was missing.
Rauner never did declare in the traditional word of two just exactly what the State of the State is. He just acknowledged to lawmakers that he had a difficult year with them last year, but this year they should still give him some business-friendly pieces of his turnaround agenda.
“If each of us commits to serious negotiation based on mutual respect for our co-equal branches of government, there’s not a doubt in my mind that we can come together to pass a balanced budget alongside reforms,” Rauner said. “If we work together, Illinois can be both compassionate and competitive.”

Rauner got only polite applause from the Democratic majority in a token standing ovation.
