(SPRINGFIELD, IL) In the state budget crisis, the backlog of unpaid bills is rising from the current $7 billion to $10 – $12 billion by the end of May.
Some of the unpaid bills go back to last March. State Comptroller Leslie Munger also told reporters the money the state is spending is on pace to rack up a new debt of a mind-boggling $6.2 billion.
“If you had $6.2 billion you could buy both of this years Super Bowl teams. You could buy the Willis Tower. You could buy a trip to the moon and back. In fact you could buy all of these things and you would still have money left over,” Munger said.
It’s a dire scenario that she’s talked about many times before. Only the numbers are bigger, but like the movie, she’s saying this time on Groundhog’s Day.
