(CHICAGO) A Chicago Federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit from a former city official, who says he was fired for finding several police shootings unjustified.
Judge Charles Kocoras ruled the city’s decision to fire former Independent Police Review Authority investigator Lorenzo Davis was not a violation of Davis’ free speech rights, as Davis alleged in his lawsuit.
Kocoras ruled Davis’ refusal to change his findings was not entitled to First Amendment protection because he was acting as a government employee within the scope of his IPRA duties, not as a private citizen.
Davis’ lawyer says she is considering an appeal of judge Korcoras’ decision.
Davis has said the city fired him because he would not reverse a ruling he made in the January 2013 shooting of black teenager Cedrick Chatman on the south side. In that ruling Davis found that the police use of force was not justified, and he says he was fired when he refused to reverse that finding.
