(CHICAGO) Reginald Potts has been sentenced to life in prison for killing ex-girlfriend, Nailah Franklin, and dumping her naked body in Calumet City in 2007.
Potts has a criminal history dating back to the mid-90’s and prosecutors say when Franklin found out about it, she broke off the relationship and threatened to get an order of protection against him.
Just over a week later, Franklin’s badly decomposed body was found in a wooded area, in Calumet City. She had been asphyxiated.
Potts, who did not testify at his trial, was convicted last fall.
Last week, he gave an emotional statement saying he did not stalk or murder Nailah Franklin. At one point, Potts even denied the two had been dating.
“I’m a very outspoken person. You’ve probably heard that. Your deputies have heard that. I speak my mind. I’m not a violent person,” said Potts.
Before telling deputies to take Potts away, Judge Thomas Gainer called him a “cold, calculating, conniving, coward of a con man who must be punished.”
