(CHICAGO) Illinois’ backlog of unpaid bills could hit $10 billion by the summer.
The backlog currently stands at $7.6 billion and State Comptroller Leslie Munger says the pile of overdue bills is growing and also racking up extra costs.
“At the end of the calendar year we had accrued about $190 million in late fees and fines and we are on track to be somewhere between $300 [million] and $350 million at the end of the fiscal year with the bill backlog that we have,” Munger said.
Munger says her office pays those bills off in the order they are received although some, like social services, have been moved to the front of the line for payment.
On any given day the state has only about $100 million on hand.
Illinois’ FY 2016 ends June 30.
