(CHICAGO) Lawmakers are back in Springfield today facing a midnight Thursday deadline to come up with a budget for schools and essential services.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is calling for compromise.
Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has been saying it’s unfair for suburban and downstate taxpayers to bailout mismanaged Chicago schools, but Mayor Emanuel is appealing to Rauner to stop saying that.
“Don’t pit taxpayers from one part of the state against another set of taxpayers. We all pay our taxes. Don’t pit children of part of the state against another. I get the politics of it. It’s not right though. Sometimes politics stops at waters edge and you do what’s right,” said Emanuel.
What the right thing to do is an open question, as is whether Rauner and Speaker Madigan will choose to compromise in order to do it.
