(MILWAUKEE)A Chicago-based communist revolutionary group blamed by Milwaukee’s police chief for stoking a second day of violence says that some of its members did go there to “support a revolution.”
The protests began Saturday evening after a black police officer shot and killed 23-year-old Sylville Smith, who was also black. Police said Smith fled a traffic stop and turned toward the officer with a gun before he was shot.
Chief Ed Flynn blamed “these characters” from the Revolutionary Communist Party that “showed up and started causing problems” on Sunday.
Party founding member Carl Dix says he wasn’t there but confirmed some party supporters went to Milwaukee. He says no one set out to cause trouble but says violence by police officers is the real issue.
