(CHICAGO) As the Chicago PD was seeking to fire Jason VanDyke and four other officers involved in the Laquan McDonald killing, Mayor Emanuel was telling reporters he’s willing to delay action on police oversight reform.
The Mayor wants the city council to vote on police oversight reform in two weeks, but some of the aldermen say they need more than two weeks to get community input on the final draft.
So with a phrase that will surprise protesters, the mayor says he’s willing to wait.
“We built up a lot of goodwill and trust and I’m not gonna do anything to violate that because I think at the end of the day I want us to focus on getting to the end result that creates the certainty that everybody needs. So, with an issue like we would like a little more time, I’m not gonna allow that to become a stumbling block. We’ve gotta get everybody to the point where there’s certainty around the rules of the road going forward.”
