(CHICAGO) Mayor Emanuel’s proposed police oversight ordinance has been taking a lot of heat lately and even Emanuel’s current police oversight chief has been talking up requirements not in the proposal.
Before Emanuel proposed his ordinance, Sharon Fairley, head of the Independent Police Review Authority, told Ald. Scott Waguepack (32nd) in a city council committee how she insulates her job from politics.
“I think that the way I’ve tried to handle it, as myself personally, just being an independent person and following my own path and my own point of view,” Fairley said. ” I think part of it also comes from transparency and then also part of it comes from being appropriately resourced. If the person who is giving me the resources is asking me to do something that creates a conflict right?
But that’s not the way the mayor wants to do it so far.
