(CHICAGO) A Chicago man is being held on a $500,000 bond on charges that he shot to death an 80 year old man at the senior living home where they both lived.
67-year old Ted Merchant and 80-year old Allen Smith lived at the Senior Suites of Rainbow Beach, on East 77th place, in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood.
Prosecutors say Ted Merchant was on a motorized scooter when he and the older man headed out to the facility’s back patio early Monday morning and got into an argument when Merchant pulled out a gun and shot Smith in the head. They say he then moved closer in his motorized scooter and fired more shots.
They say Merchant who can walk with the help of a cane got into a Lincoln Town Car and drove away.
Smith’s body was found several hours later, around 6am.
Merchant, at some point, returned because responding officers found him in the Town Car in the senior living facility’s parking lot.
Prosecutors say the shooting was captured on surveillance video and Merchant was identified by 3 people as the shooter. He faces one count of first-degree murder.
