(CHICAGO) A grand jury will consider if Chicago police lied in connection with the fatal shooting of a black teenager by a white officer in 2014.
Special prosecutor Patricia Brown Holmes says that a grand jury is the fairest way to handle the case instead of making decisions on charges herself.
Holmes was appointed two months ago to investigate whether there was a police cover-up in the shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by officer Jason Van Dyke.
Police say Van Dyke fired at McDonald 16 times in October 2014, as McDonald was wandering down a street with PCP in his bloodstream while wielding a knife. A police dashcam video captured the shooting and has led to calls for reforms and prompted a U.S. Justice Department investigation of Chicago police practices.
Van Dyke has pleaded not guilty in his criminal case.
