(CHICAGO) One of the co-owners of SUPES Academy pleaded guilty today in connection with bribing former head of Chicago Public Schools Barbara Byrd-Bennett.
Gary Solomon initially pleaded not guilty a year ago, but changed his plea. He along with a co-owner of SUPES are accused of offering the bribes in exchange for steering a $23 million no-bid contract with Chicago Public Schools to their firm.
Solomon pleaded guilty to one count of honest services wire fraud and could face up to 20 years in prison when sentenced in late March.
Byrd-Bennett, who resigned from CPS in June 2015, ended up pleading guilty to one of 20 fraud charges in October 2015 with the other charges being dropped. She has been awaiting sentencing in suburban Cleveland. Her sentencing hearing could be scheduled next week when her attorneys return to court.
