(CHICAGO) As the Teachers’ Retirement System moves to terminate his pension, Hastert is arguing that the federal charges he was convicted of are not directly connected to his time as a history teacher at Yorkville High School.
Hastert is serving a 15 month sentence after pleading guilty to bank fraud involving payments to cover up sexual misconduct. At his April sentencing, the former House Speaker admitted he had sexually abused teenage boys while he coached the school’s wrestling team. Hastert worked as a teacher from 1965 to 1981.
Earlier this month, a judge said a civil lawsuit against Hastert can proceed. That suit has been brought by Individual A, who claims he was a victim of Hastert when he was 14. He is seeking the rest of the money he says Hastert agreed to pay him for restitution. Hastert’s attorneys were unsuccessful in trying to have the lawsuit dismissed, arguing that the statute of limitations had run out.
