(CHICAGO) Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he thinks the Justice Department’s threat to cut law enforcement funding to Sanctuary Cities like Chicago “is a bit of a joke.”
Both the mayor and his new city attorney have White House experience. Emanuel is claiming it may be illegal for the Justice Department to cut off law enforcement funds to Chicago. In any case, he’s calling the attempt a bit of a joke.
“I find it a little ironic they said they’re going to cut or withhold money on public safety,” Emanuel said. “Did you see the president’s budget that he introduced? He actually cut the Justice Department. So this is actually, in my view, a bit of a joke in that sense.”
The mayor’s also moving off of the term Sanctuary City in favor of calling Chicago a “Welcoming City,” which may provide some legal wiggle room.
