(CHICAGO) The bill to legalize marijuana in Illinois will get a legislative hearing next Wednesday here in Chicago. Backers were out promoting it today.
The idea is to tax and regulate pot because prohibition only makes dope dealers rich. You’d be able to buy up to 28 ounces at a time and here’s how State Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) proposes to tax it.
“An excise tax on the distributor, one the grower of $50 per ounce and then regular sales taxes apply at the retail level,” Cassidy said.
It’s estimated this could raise $350 – $700 million for the state and Cassidy’s co-sponsor State Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago) is so confident the bill will pass she’s uses the phrase “when, not if” on its prospects.
