Republicans held a victory lap with President Donald J. Trump in the Rose Garden yesterday as their repeal of Obamacare narrowly passed, 217-214. Both House and Senate Democrats were quick to attack the bill. Congressman Mike Quigley called the vote “shameful,” saying in a statement, “Today, Republicans put politics over people by moving forward on a bill with only hours’ notice and without an updated cost estimate. Unfortunately, we know the cost it will have on tens of millions of Americans who will lose health care coverage as a result.”
Quigley continued, “I was proud to vote for the Affordable Care Act, which was one of my first votes in Congress. This historic, life-saving law gave people the peace of mind that comes with reliable coverage that doesn’t force a choice between taking care of your well-being and putting food on the table. Prioritizing the fulfillment of campaign promises should never come at the expense of our constituents’ health.
