(SPRINGFIELD) Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan has called legislators back Thursday afternoon to vote on an override of Governor Bruce Rauner’s veto of the pending state budget with an income tax hike.
Madigan would not have called the vote if he didn’t think he had the votes to beat Governor Rauner. And so Rauner is all but begging legislators not to do it.
“Don’t do it!,” said Rauner, “It’ll just hurt the people of Illinois more, push more people out of the state and our children and our grandchildren will not have a better future here in our home.”
The Governor adds “Speaker Madigan and his subordinates, they wanted a crisis. They wanted to hurt innocent people to force a tax hike with no changes to the system.”
Rauner repeatedly argued that letting the state’s credit rating drop into junk status would be preferable to overriding him.
