(SPRINGFIELD) Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan was the big winner because he beat Gov Rauner.
He called it “an unbelievable struggle” but as his mentor the first Mayor Daley taught him, he was humble in victory, saying “There are a lot of things that will be said about this vote, but the most important thing that I can point to is that Republican legislators and Democratic legislators got this done together.”
Governor Bruce Rauner was the big loser because his vetoes were not sustained. He called it “another step in the state’s never-ending tragic trail of tax hikes.”
He put it more bluntly Wednesday when he said, “This is not just a slap in the face to Illinois taxpayers. This is a 2×4 smacked across the forehead of the people of Illinois.”
Some believe the Governor will keep swinging that argument like a 2 x 4 in the coming campaign for governor.
