ELGIN, Ill. (AP) — A new bicycle race will debut in Illinois named after a cyclist who died two years ago in an accident with a vehicle.
The Dennis Jurs Memorial Race is scheduled for July 18 in Elgin. It’s the fifth of ten races that are part of the Intelligentsia Cup series July 13-23 in the Chicago suburbs.
Jurs grew up in Elgin. His daughter says he got into cycling to help him after the Vietnam War. He was riding May 18, 2015, when he died after a collision with a vehicle. The vehicle had stopped at a stop sign and was moving through an intersection when Jurs crashed into it. Jurs did not have a stop sign.
The accident inspired “Dennis’ Law,” which gives bicyclists the same right of way as motorists.
