(CHICAGO) Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is now asking for $17M in damages from the retailers.
She wants the $17M to cover lost pennies-per-ounce while the retailers were unsuccessfully suing to try to kill the tax.
Their leader Tanya Trishe isn’t too worried because the judge had already denied a $17M bond at the beginning of the court case, saying “The judge made some comments about it possible having a chilling effect and I would agree. People who believe that laws that apply to them have a right to challenge them and shouldn’t be discouraged from doing so because of the threat that they would have to pay back taxes.”
Meantime, Cook County has put the threatened 300 layoffs and the closing of 600 vacancies on hold.
