(MATTOON, Ill.) — A student is in custody and a teacher is being hailed as a hero after a shooting broke out Wednesday at Mattoon High School that left one person wounded.
Police were called to the school after reports of shots fired in the cafeteria around 11:30 a.m. Officials say a teacher was able to disarm the student after he fired shots.
The injured person, whose identity hasn’t been released, was said to be in stable condition at an area hospital. The school was placed on lockdown for a while as police secured the school.
Local media reports say that over 200 police officers responded to the scene including officers from Mattoon, nearby Charleston and Eastern Illinois University.
