(CHICAGO) Governor Bruce Rauner has won a rare victory today in the legislature.
Speaker Madigan fell one vote short of beating Rauner.
A right to work bill was the issue.
Rauner wants to let local governmentt to use non-union work.
Democrats passed a bill to block that.
Rauner vetoed the bill.
During debate to try to override his veto, State Representative Jay Hoffman argued for the unions, saying “Wages go down, safety goes down, the ability to have heathcare for workers goes down, ther ability to have a pension when you retire is decreased.”
But Republicans said an override would be a nail in the coffin for business.
They won, but their victory may be erased when the Democrats try again next month.
