(CHICAGO) A federal jury says the City of Chicago must pay Michael LaPorta almost $45 million after he was shot in the head in January 2010.
It happened at his friend Chicago Police Officer Patrick Kelly’s house and after a night of drinking.
Kelly said it was a suicide but, on the stand, invoked his constitutional right not to incriminate himself.
The jury determined that Kelly pulled the trigger and that the CPD enabled him over the years but it did not make a specific finding on whether there was a “code of silence” in the department. Even Mayor Emanuel has previously acknowledged that a “code of silence” exists.
Michael LaPorta, 37, is in a wheelchair and needs round-the-clock care. His family requested $90 million.
