(CHICAGO) Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s appointment of his former deputy Andrea Zopp to be a member of the Police Board has been unanimously recommended in a delayed confirmation hearing of the City Council Public Safety Committee.
Zopp’s confirmation hearing was postponed Friday over concerns about her independence. She answered those concerns at the reconvened hearing, “I have been an independent public board member. I was independent when I sat on the school board. I am independent before and after.”
But Carl Brinson, the president of the West Side branch of the NAACP said Zopp’s appointment won’t lead to police reform, “This is not a representation of our community where we’re just recycling appointments people. This is not going to work.”
Nonetheless the Public Safety committee unanimously recommended Zopp’s appointment.
