(CHICAGO) The proposal to legalize recreational marijuana for adults in Illinois got another legislative hearing today and Bill Cameron says the PBS travel show host Rick Steves testified for it.
Rick Steves crusaded for legalizing marijuana in his home state of Washington and he told Illinois lawmakers pot is not a gateway drug, saying “When you legalize marijuana, use does not go up. Teen use does not go up. DUIs don’t go up. Crime does not go up. What goes up is tax revenue and what goes down is a black market.”
Opponents disagree and argue marijuana is a gateway to hard drug use. Backers of the Illinois proposal hope to legalize it here next year.
