Note: Bill Cameron reported on John Anderson’s run for President in 1980
(CHICAGO) Former Rockford Congressman John Anderson who ran as an independent candidate for president in 1980 has died in Washington DC at the age of 95.
John Anderson was a moderate Republican, a congenial man of integrity from Rockford who ran against Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter in 1980. He had some responsible but unpopular ideas like raising taxes on gasoline to try to reduce consumption of oil, “I say that because this year we will send $90B out of the country to pay for imported oil even though those imports have been reduced. And since I first made that proposal 15 months ago, the price of gasoline which was then 80 cents has gone up to $1.30.”
Oh, for the days of 80 cent a gallon gasoline. By the way, John Anderson got only 7% of the vote.
