(WASHINGTON) — As lawmakers on Capitol Hill grapple with a looming budget shutdown Friday night, one Illinois congressman is confident a deal can be made on helping “Dreamer.”
U.S. Rep, Adam Kinzinger (R-Channahon) says Democrats are ringing a false alarm when it comes to illegal immigrants brought here as children. He says he and many of his colleagues support “Dreamers” and lawmakers will get something done.
“I’m a supporter of DACA and what’s been going on but we are going to have to ultimately get to something where there’s a win for boarder as well as for the DACA recipients and we do have time to do it,” Kinzinger said. “The Democrats have been putting this kind of artificial panic timeline on this and frankly panicking a lot of people when I think both sides have been pretty clear, not 100-percent of both sides, but both sides have been pretty clear it’s an issue we want to fix and I’m confident we will.”
Both the White House and leaders in Congress are working on legislation to come up with a replacement for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals plan as well as creating a legal status for those covered by the Obama-era program. A bi-partisan deal is likely to be reached in January.
