(CHICAGO) 85,000 Cook County homeowners have now prepaid more than $529 million in first-installment property taxes due in March
These taxpayers are trying to avoid the what they fear is a $10,000 cap on property tax deductions in the new federal tax code. There is an IRS advisory causing confusion about this if the amount is only an estimate, but Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas tells me it probably doesn’t apply to Cook County, “We do know what the March payment is and we do know that it is an exact bill with exact assessments. It’s on line and you can get it.”
Pappas will take prepayments in various ways all the way up until midnight New Years Eve deadline. The place to go to find out how to do this is cookcountytreasurer.com
