(CHICAGO, IL) In the City Council Finance Committee, the latest legal settlement for police misconduct is being called “crazy.”
This is a case of taxpayers paying $20M for police misconduct that occurred while they were off duty.
The now imprisoned ex-cop, Joe Frugoli, drove drunk in 2009 and killed two men trapped in a burning car he hit.
The police department did not discipline him for two previous crashes – one in which he was on duty and crashed into another squad car injuring two cops.
But the mayor’s lawyers recommended the city cut its losses and settle for 20M rather than go to a trial verdict.
Alderman Tom Tunney called it “crazy,” adding “It’s the perception that the police are not accountable to the city. That’s the bigger issue here. And, of course, the way we’re paying is thru the nose.”
Other aldermen wondered what’s being done to prevent the police code of silence from letting this kind of pay out happen again.
