(CHICAGO) — High school students in Plainfield will get detention if they participate in a walkout planned for next week.
Emma Simpson, a student at Plainfield North High School who helped organize the local walkout set for 17 minutes on March14 in memory of the 17 people killed at the high school in Parkland, Florida.
Plainfield School District 202 officials say that students who walk out will face detention, but Simpson tells John and Ray on WLS that there has been some agreement between students and the school administrators.
“We had a meeting with our superintendent yesterday … and what he told us was he gave us the alternative of the detention and he also said this will not be put on our record, our files, he’s not taking away walking at graduation or at prom,” Simpson said.
Students who walk out will serve detention together in the auditorium.
The district says it recognizes the protest is within the students’ First Amendment rights but are concerned for student safety outside of the classroom.
