(CHICAGO) At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, competing versions of community oversight of Chicago police were introduced.
It’s all about who gets to set police policy and fire a superintendent. A community group wants that, but City Council Public Safety Committee chairman Ariel Roboyras doesn’t, noting “It’s not what we wanna see!”
Nicole Jordan of the Grassroots Alliance for Police Accountability feels betrayed, pointing out “This is a slap in the face of the community residents who have worked hard over the last year and a half for this ordinance. We want real power. We want a real ability to say how our communities are policed.”
When all is said and done it’s very unlikely City Hall is going to give up much control of police policy.
