(CHICAGO) Mayor Rahm Emanuel is deposed in a police shooting case and a judge lifts a gag order with the lawyers for the families of the two victims then letting loose.
Lawyers for the families of Quintonio LeGreir and Bettie Jones say Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson is protecting one of his own and taking part in a “code of silence” by turning down a recommendation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability to fire Officer Robert Rialmo.
“For Superintendent Eddie Johnson to have exonerated that officer is despicable, it’s disgusting, and it should not be tolerated,” said Larry Rogers Jr. attorney for the Jones estate.
Rialmo shot Quintonio LeGrier, 19, who was carrying a bat during a domestic disturbance call in 2015. Bettie Jones, a neighbor, was standing near the teen when the officer started shooting. She was struck in the chest.
Superintendent Johnson, who gave a deposition last week, says the shooting was justified.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel showed up for his deposition on Thursday and it will remain under seal.
Officer Robert Rialmo is on desk duty and has been stripped of his police powers.
