(CHICAGO) On the question of whether Chicago Police officer Robert Rialmo should be fired for killing Antonio LeGrier and Bettie Jones, the Police Board is taking up the matter because Police Supt. Eddie Johnson and Civilian Office of Police Accountability disagree.
A randomly-selected Police Board member will have ten days to review the case. That happens when COPA and the Police Supt. disagree.
If the Police Board member rules for Supt. Johnson, then Rialmo will not be fired.
If the Police Board member rules for COPA, then the full Police Board takes up the matter.
Former COPA chief Sharon Fairley says the case has reached a sensitive stage, “From here, we have to make sure that the case proceeds with transparency and integrity. That’s what the community needs to be concerned about. I take no position on who’s right and who’s wrong. Now the point is to understand where the process is going and make sure it’s going to be transparent so everybody understands what’s gonna happen, how it happens and that it’s done with transparency.”
Supt. Johnson doesn’t want Rialmo fired because he doesn’t think he broke the rules.
