(CHICAGO) Ford CEO Jim Hackett says by 2020 almost 90% of the Ford portfolio in North America will be trucks, utilities, and commercial vehicles. What’s missing? Cars. “Given declining customer demand and product profitability, we will not invest in next generations of traditional Ford sedans for North America.,” said Hackett. Ford will still produce the Mustang and a new Focus Active crossover.
What this means for Chicago’s South Side Ford Assembly Plant, where some 4,000 people work, is an end to the production of the Taurus and Police Interceptor.
However, a Ford spokesperson says layoffs are NOT expected there because taking the place of the Taurus and Interceptor will be the 2020 Lincoln Aviator SUV, a new Ford Explorer and a police version of the SUV.
