- President Trump has threatened to shut down the federal government in September if Congress doesn’t approve more funding for a border wall.
- At a campaign rally in Michigan Saturday night, Trump told the crowd “if we don’t get border security we will have no choice, we will close down the country because we need border security.”
- Trump once again brought up a “caravan” of Central American migrants that he says is heading for the border “because they know once they can get here they can walk right into our country.”
- In March, the government briefly shut down before Congress approved a $1.3 trillion spending bill that keeps the government funded through September.
- That bill included $1.6 billion for a wall, much less than Trump has been seeking.
- It remains to be seen if Trump’s fellow Republicans would be keen on a government shutdown right before the November midterm elections.
