(CHICAGO) Former congressman Mel Reynolds is heading back to prison for not paying federal taxes. Judge Robert Gettleman told Reynolds that it’s a “tragedy” that he squandered opportunities to become “something better.”
Reynolds was found guilty, in a bench trial, of failing to file tax returns for income made while consulting for Chicago businessmen in Africa. The Judge also cited Reynolds’ conviction in the mid 1990s for statutory rape and later convictions, including for concealing debts.
Reynolds had asked the judge for a year of probation.
After his sentencing he told reporters, “It’s just the way it is. It’s life. It wasn’t a violent crime.”
Mel Reynolds says he plans to move to Africa after finishing his sentence. He has to report to prison on August 1.
