(CHICAGO) Mayoral challenger Paul Vallas is out with a proposal to combat lead in Chicago’s drinking water. Some are saying it would come at a cost to most homeowners.
Vallas believes there’s too much lead in Chicago’s drinking water creating a health hazard. He proposes to test the lines from the street to the house as new water mains are installed.
Then, if a problem shows up, homeowners would pay a “modest” amount to install water filtration systems.
“The homeowner could pay over a period of two to three years,” Vallas noted, “We’re not talking about the three or four or five thousand dollars, sometimes more, that it would cost to replace the the main lines. Sometimes were talking a filtration systems that are a couple of hundred dollars.”
In the same news conference, Vallas complained that homeowners are bearing a greater burden of property taxes because the city’s lost about 17% of its assessed valuation since the 2008 recession.
